Mozart’s Milanese String Quartets K. 155–160 & K. 80

A fresh interpretation of Mozart’s early string quartets is now available, performed by the Engegård Quartet. This recording presents the six Milanese Quartets (K. 155–160), composed during Mozart’s stay in Milan in 1772–73, alongside the earlier K. 80, written when he was just 14.

These works offer a glimpse into the young composer’s evolving voice—elegant, lyrical, and full of inventive charm. The Milanese Quartets are notable for their three-movement structure, Italianate grace, and expressive slow movements, including the striking Adagio in E minor from K. 156. The set follows a circle-of-fourths key scheme, revealing Mozart’s architectural playfulness even at a young age.

The Engegård Quartet brings clarity, warmth, and vitality to these works, illuminating their youthful energy and subtle sophistication. Known for their dynamic ensemble playing and deep musical insight, the Norwegian quartet has earned international acclaim for their interpretations of both classical and contemporary repertoire.

This release continues the ensemble’s exploration of Mozart’s chamber music, offering listeners a vibrant and historically informed performance that speaks to the timeless appeal of these early quartets.

Formed under the midnight sun in Lofoten in 2005, the Engegård Quartet has rapidly become one of Norway’s most sought-after ensembles. Their bold, fresh interpretations of the classical repertoire combined with a deep attachment to their Scandinavian roots have attracted international acclaim and inspired innovative partnerships and programming.

Johan Kvandal: Complete String Quartets - Engegård Quartet

The composer Johan Kvandal (1919–1999) is one of Norway's most important, and most performed, composers of the 20th century. For the first time ever, his complete works for string quartet, spanning four decades of his life, are presented on one album.

Mozart String Quartets: Viennese Quartets K. 168-173 - Engegård Quartet

Mozart: Viennese Quartets marks the final volume in the Engegård Quartet’s ambitious and deeply personal journey through Mozart’s complete string quartets. The six works featured here—K.168 to K.173—were composed in Vienna in 1773, a period of artistic growth and experimentation for the young composer. These quartets reveal Mozart’s increasing command of form and texture, blending elegance with emotional complexity and a bold sense of invention.
