Two noble rivals, a wicked conspirator, a heroic woman: Die Raeuberbraut brought Ferdinand Ries unforeseen success in 1828. The operatic debut of the Bonn-born composer was staged in numerous German cities and in Paris, Amsterdam and London. Posterity remembers Ries as pupil and Biographer of Beethoven. "The Robber Bride" shows, however, that he could write very effectively for the stage.
