BBC Music Magazine February 2020 Concerto Choice
‘virtuosissimo’ is a photograph of an influential moment in music history. With this new album, Dmitry Sinkovsky - a dazzlingly multi-talented artist, a brilliant violinist, countertenor, conductor -goes beyond Vivaldi and his influences: as well as Pisendel, he plays works by Locatelli, Tartini, Leclair and Telemann, all of whom enriched the early 18th Century violin repertoire with opulent, highly personal works focusing on soloistic bravura.
He breezes through the salvo of technical challenges…Yet he also brings a refined musicality and a sense of period style to these concertos, so alongside the fireworks there’s playing of exquisite delicacy and tenderness…Il Pomo d’Oro is proving to be one of the most brilliant ensembles on the early music stage today, and the players respond to Sinkovsky’s direction with blazing energy. It’s only February, but this could well end up being my disc of the year. BBC *****
