NORDIC NOEL - A WINTER JOURNEY IN SONG

A shimmering collection of Nordic Christmas songs and winter-themed works finds new life in Nordic Noël, a deeply evocative collaboration between mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland and pianist Nils Anders Mortensen. This album offers a contemplative and poetic soundscape, weaving together beloved carols, lesser-known gems, and art songs from Norway.

Nordic Noël is not just a seasonal album—it’s a sonic reflection on light and darkness, longing and peace, winter and wonder. Recorded with crystalline clarity and artistic integrity, this release invites listeners into a world where snow falls gently, memories stir, and music glows like candlelight. The repertoire spans centuries and styles—from Grieg’s tender lullaby “Julens Vuggesang” to Lauridsen’s ethereal “O magnum mysterium”, and from Fredrikke Egeberg’s poetic “Julemorgen” to Kvandal’s evocative “Den yndigste rose.” The album also features beloved classics like Stille natt (Silent Night), arranged by Mortensen, and rare gems such as Christkindleins Wiegenlied and Die heil’gen drei Könige.

Each track is shaped with nuance and emotional depth. Kielland’s warm, expressive voice pairs seamlessly with Mortensen’s sensitive and richly colored piano playing, creating a musical dialogue that feels both timeless and deeply rooted in Nordic tradition.

Marianne Beate Kielland is one of Norway’s most distinguished mezzo-sopranos, known for her profound musical insight and wide-ranging repertoire. With an extensive discography and international acclaim, she brings emotional honesty and vocal elegance to every performance.

Nils Anders Mortensen is a celebrated Norwegian pianist whose poetic touch and interpretive depth have made him a sought-after chamber musician and soloist. His collaborations are marked by sensitivity, clarity, and a deep connection to the music’s inner life.

Sigurd Lie Songs, Vol. 1 - Kielland, Marianne Beate (mezzo-soprano) / Mortensen, Nils Anders (piano)

Sigurd Lie was one of the eminent and gifted composers at the end of the nineteenth century. His body of work includes instrumental music and music for male choir and, above all, around 75 songs seldom performed after his death. The song texts were written by Norwegian poets, among them Vilhelm Krag, Sigbjørn Obstfelder and Per Sivle. This is the first of two releases in which Kielland and Mortensen illuminate all the songs and let them shine.

Sigurd Lie Songs, Vol. 2 - Kielland, Marianne Beate (mezzo-soprano) / Mortensen, Nils Anders (piano)
