My earlier CDs, with the exception of a personal portrait recorded in 1990, have special themes. One of them, Music from the Mediterranean (Sterling CDA1664), contains music by composers from countries bordering on the Mediterranean. Another, Romantic Silhouettes (Sterling CDA1680), is a cross-section through a century of Romantic music by composers from central Europe. The present disc, Nordic Master Composers, includes four major works by some of the Nordic countries’ top composers. As I live in that part of the world myself, it felt right to make a record of Nordic music – even if no Icelandic works are featured.
All the composers are different in character, but they still have a musical style in common. - Maria Kihlgren
The pianist Maria Kihlgren was born in Switzerland, but has lived in Sweden since the age of seven. She studied at Göteborgs Musikhögskola and at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna gaining her diploma in 1979. She has performed in Sweden and several European countries, the USA and South America, where she was Swedish representative at the 11th International Piano Festival in Bucaramanga, Colombia. Apart from her performances as soloist she often appears as a chamber musician, and has played in different ensembles, for example at chamber music concerts at Stockholm Concert Hall. She is also a popular educator, and gives private piano tuition. In recent years she has also
devoted herself to recordings. Her CD:s, with solo music for piano on the Sterling label, have been internationally acclaimed. All of them have a specific theme, with cover pictures by her father, the painter Carl Speglitz.
