This is the first major complete symphony cycle on the release and it comes from the 19th century: the six symphonies of Tchaikovsky performed by the St. Petersburg Philharmonic – arguably the Tchaikovsky orchestra – under its music director Yuri Temirkanov. BBC Music Magazine praised the “remarkable vividness and warmth of the playing” in reviewing these recordings made in the “truthful acoustics of the wonderful 1830s’ hall in which the orchestra lives and breathes.
