NORDIC UNREST

Nordic Unrest is a striking new solo piano album by the Norwegian pianist Oda Voltersvik. This deeply expressive recording explores the dramatic landscapes and folkloristic characters of the Nordic region. The composers Edvard Grieg and Atli Heimir Sveinsson are separated by a century but united in their ability to combine unrest with musical poetry.

The album opens with a selection of Grieg’s lesser-known gems and beloved Lyric Pieces, including Little Bird, To Spring, and March of the Dwarfs, before diving into the dramatic Ballade in G minor, Op. 24—a towering work of grief, inner conflict and resilience. Voltersvik’s interpretation brings clarity and depth to Grieg’s shifting moods, from folkloric charm to stormy introspection.

The Icelandic composer Atli Heimir Sveinsson captures the spirit of Iceland with his work Óður steinsins (The Song of the Stone) based on an epic with the same name by Kristján frá Djúpalæk. Eleven selected movements traverse a wide expressive range—from the majestic Maestoso to the haunting Flebile and the explosive Agitato. Voltersvik’s performance captures the raw energy and poetic nuance of Sveinsson’s writing, revealing a voice that is both contemporary and timeless. With Nordic Unrest, Oda Voltersvik offers a compelling narrative of Nordic identity—composed of nature, myth, melancholy, and resilience. The album is a testament to her artistry and to the enduring emotional power of Nordic music.

Oda Voltersvik is a Norwegian pianist acclaimed for her expressive depth and refined technique. She has performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall (Weill Recital Hall), Wigmore Hall, Edvard Grieg Museum and the Norwegian Opera House, and is a frequent soloist and chamber musician across Europe and the United States. A graduate of the Royal College of Music in London and the Grieg Academy in Bergen, Voltersvik is known for her thoughtful programming and commitment to Nordic repertoire. Her recordings have received praise for their clarity, sensitivity, and interpretive insight.
