With this album, Sanae Yoshida presents five new solo works for the microtonal piano by composers Eivind Buene (N), Keiko Harada (J), Øyvind Mæland (N), Michelle Agnes Magalhaes (BR) and Andreas Gundersen (N). As a musical instrument the piano is, both literally and figuratively, black and white. A paradigm of discipline and order, carefully tuned such that all intervals between the notes are the same, and that all keys, major and minor, sound with an absolute maximum of consistent, consonant clarity.

THE MICROTONAL PIANO

With this album, Sanae Yoshida presents five new solo works for the microtonal piano by composers Eivind Buene (N), Keiko Harada (J), Øyvind Mæland (N), Michelle Agnes Magalhaes (BR) and Andreas Gundersen (N).

As a musical instrument the piano is, both literally and figuratively, black and white. A paradigm of discipline and order, carefully tuned such that all intervals between the notes are the same, and that all keys, major and minor, sound with an absolute maximum of consistent, consonant clarity. Regardless of what the piano may look like, and how it might have been designed, arranged and built, for many composers an instrument is less a full stop than a question mark, a collection of materials that have the potential to constitute a panoply of multicoloured technical possibilities.

Beyond the black and white, beyond shades of grey, beyond even multicolour, the music on this album utilises microtones and other techniques to enable journeys into musical realms that lie far outside the piano’s usual territory. It questions, and makes us question, what the piano really is, what its nature is like, what its capabilities are, what its limits might be. They do this through experiment and play, but also through personal reflection and expression, offering insights into both the heart of music as well as the human spirit.

Sanae Yoshida is an Oslo-based pianist performing both contemporary and classical repertoire, both as a solo and chamber/ensemble musician. She has been working closely with a number of composers and has premiered a large number of works.

Lamento - Oslo Circles / Kielland, Marianne Beate (mezzo-soprano)

In the midst of the pandemic the baroque ensemble Oslo Circles recorded its new CD, “Lamento”, for LAWO Classics. The soloist — mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland — has performed with the group for many years, and together they present beautiful and melancholy Italian baroque music from the seventeenth century.

Norwegian Opera Overtures - The Norwegian National Opera Orchestra

The Norwegian opera literature is a well concealed and all too little known gem in our national cultural heritage. There is general agreement that it begins with the Waldemar Thrane/Henrik Bjerregaard Singspiel Fjeld-eventyret (The Mountain Story) from 1824. And throughout the nineteenth century there were a number of Norwegian composers who wrote operas, most of them now long forgotten.

Botschaft des Ridicolas - Holmertz, Elisabeth (soprano) / Karlsson, Kenneth (piano)

When the uncompromising duo Elisabeth Holmertz and Kenneth Karlsson finally release their long-awaited album on LAWO Classics, we find Norwegian and German contemporary music on the menu. On “Botschaft des Ridicolas” we hear “Got Lost” by Helmut Lachenmann - a 30-minute long wild and poetic work that has become a modern classic, and which is supposedly one of the composer's own favorites; the quiet, sensual, melancholic “Meditasjon over Georges de La Tour XVII” by Jon Øivind Ness; and finally Rolf Wallin's desperate, punk work “...though what made it has gone.”

Ricercare - Ssens Trio

Ssens Trio is out with its third CD release on the LAWO Classics label. While the debut album (LWC1122) featured trios of Beethoven and its successor (LWC1170) was devoted to Mozart, this release spotlights Norwegian music. With this deep dive into the Norwegian repertoire, Ssens Trio wishes to call attention to four works for string trio deserving of inclusion in the international string trio repertoire.

Saan - Mikalsen, Jan Erik
