Initially, there was great scepticism towards the thesis that Bach’s sacred vocal works were originally written for solo voices.
With this edition of one cantata for each Sunday and the great feasts of the ecclesiastical year Kuijken, Sigiswald and La Petite Bande want to strengthen this new approach and prove it right by their excellent performances.
This Vol. 15 of the edition contains cantatas which Bach, Johann Sebastian wrote for the last four Sundays before Advent: BWV 52 „ False world, I trust thee not!“, BWV 60 „O Eternity, thou thunderous word“, BWV 116 „Thou Prince of Peace, Lord Jesus Christ“, BWV 140 „Awaken ye, the watchman calls us“.
“Here again Kuijken and La Petite Bande bring their most natural and distilled spaciousness to proceedings. If the opening movement of Wachet auf is a touch prosaic, even emaciated at times, the subsequent duet between the Soul and Christ is a heart-warming essay in gentle domestic rumination. The dialogue between instruments and solo voices is indeed where these performances come alive” GRAMOPHONE
“He [Kuijken] strives for as near an authentic experience as is reasonably possible, and the results of his arguments are persuasive. The agility of his soloists in the ‘choral’ movements helps to explain Bach’s often mightily complex contrapuntal lines” INT. RECORD REVIEW
