The family is itself - Jordi Savall and his label Alia Vox
From medieval chants to Boccherini's and Mozart's music, Jordi Savall's artistic horizon of eight centuries is unusually wide. Three ensembles make up this cosmos - La Capella Reial de Catalunya is dedicated to the tradition of Savall's Catalan homeland and Spanish music, Hespèrion XXI stands for European music from the Middle Ages to the Early Baroque, Le Concert des Nations focuses on the traditions of the European Baroque up to the dawn of classical music
In addition to their extensive activities as musicians, Jordi Savall and his wife Montserrat Figueras have trained young musicians for decades. With their work, especially as professors at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, they have paved the way for an entire generation of young people into the music profession
The Savalls are a family business: daughter Arianna and son Ferran follow in the footsteps of their mother as singers, Arianna is also a harpist, Ferran plays the lute and theorbo. The joint programmes of the Savall family, with the inclusion of oriental music and European folk music traditions, make one think at first glance of world music. But this commitment is also entirely in line with the life work of Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras: to trace the common roots of the diverse cultural traditions of today's Europe
After an impressive discography with various record companies, Jordi Savall decided in 1998 to found his own company for his recordings: ALIAVOX proved to be an instant success, both with the audience and the critics. The courage to become self-employed in the midst of the much-calculated crisis of the record industry and to declare the coherence of the highest artistic and technical standards the backbone of this new foundation has paid off - ALIAVOX today sells almost one million CDs a year and is represented in 45 countries around the world.
Savall sets some brisk tempos, particularly for the slow movement of Eine kleine Nachtmusik, but they're convincing. …it's vivid playing from everyone, well defined in outline and responding imaginatively to the varied character of Mozart's music. BBC *****
