Schütz composed the Musikalische Exequien in 1635/36 for the funeral of his Sovereign Heinrich Posthumous Reuss. This CD also includes songs of mourning, some of which have not been released before. Featuring artists such as Mields, Dorothee, Harry van der Kamp and directed by Rademann, this is a wonderful addition to the series.
“this much-recorded work receives as fine an interpretation as I can recall, thanks in no small measure to a cast of distinguished and sympathetic singers. But the continuo section, the recorded atmosphere and an unhurried sense of pacing also play their part. It's impossible not to remark on Schutz's marvellous rhetorical efficiency...but by eschewing drama in favour of interiority, Rademann's ensemble also achieves something rather special.” GRAMOPHONE
“Rademann's straightforwardness allows the music to emerge with an entirely apt clarity and austerity...With very interesting and detailed booklet notes, complete texts and translations, and a recording that sounds very natural and is impeccably balanced, this is a disc I recommend without any hesitation.” INT. RECORD REVIEW
“the choir’s expertise with this style is self-evident and the Radeberg church acoustic serves the music like a tailor-made suit. It is expertly captured by the Carus engineers...This disc deserves to win more fans for Rademann’s great project, as well as for the composer himself.” MUSIC WEB INT.
