In the whole of Bach’s work, three church Cantatas remain today which use a bass soloist, in addition to one secular Cantata ascribed to him. In these bass arias there is a little of Bach himself, who used to be heard singing: “He had a good voice, penetrating and very loud, as well as a good singing manner”, according to his son Carl Philipp Emanuel. And the actual words are so reflective of his own feelings, it is only natural that they should be heard spoken by his voice. Il Gardellino and Dominik Wörner recorded Bach’s Cantatas for Bass ´with the spirit of the composer’s voice.
